Flying cars: A transportation eureka

Flying cars, huh? I know you’ve probably heard or seen this one somewhere before but before you roll your eyes, hear me out. Yes, flying cars; and not in the way you’re probably thinking about it. Think about cable cars but without the cables, with propellers and blades instead.

Air transport is definitely not a new concept. It has been around for hundreds of years now with the invention of the airplane by the Wright brothers. However, air transport as we have it today is in my opinion far from convenient especially with inter state or inter country journeys. Wait times at the airport, the hassle of checking in and out at pick off point and destination, the complexities of aviation due processes and the occasional flight cancellations are only a few of the current downsides to a system that is obviously more preferred by most because of its speed. But of course, it could be made faster.

Imagine a situation where you are transported from your place of residence or somewhere close to it to your exact destination in the next city, by air!! This would be made possible with the use of air taxis. Basically, a carriage-like structure that would be airborne and have a maximum capacity of 2 or 3 including the pilot (driver). Apparently, this is technology that is already undergoing some experimentation in advanced parts of the world and probably in use already in private spheres. However, I believe its advent into the public domain is imminent and would go a long way in cutting out a lot of idling time that results from the conventional air transport and enable for better time management.

One of the obvious upsides with this is that there would be no need to have a large expanse of space and structure designated for take-off and landing as we have for airports currently. Parking spaces which already serve cars would serve as temporary hangars where passengers would be picked and dropped off. If this is made to be a part of our everyday society as we have it, more parking spaces could be incorporated as part of town planning and wouldn’t be much difficult to implement as they require less space.

These air taxis would basically serve for short and medium length distances in order to ease the pressure on the major airports in most cities and enable more seamless air transport. Similar to the booming online commercial taxis we have now such as Bolt, Uber, Taxify and so much more, companies could establish commercial air taxi services which individuals can then access from their devices with ease and comfort. Since it already works for road transportation, who’s to say it can not for air transportation? In addition, it would also provide job opportunities as specialized personnel would be needed to man, pilot and coordinate these air taxis once in the public space.

A big issue nowadays is that people are becoming less and less in control of their own times and hence less productive with what they can achieve both in the short and long term. This would definitely give our current society an edge in this aspect.
