Why I wanted to be a developer

SPOILER ALERT: This story doesn’t end in the way you are most likely expecting it to. But hey, where’s the thrill if it did?

I am an Electrical/electronics engineering undergraduate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. My sojourn into the tech space also somewhat coincided with my entry into the university. However, I didn’t get into coding or any programming at all till 2 years ago.

As a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, schools and pretty much everything else had to be shut down for months; the much-acclaimed lockdown. So here I was with all that time and nothing to do. Like everyone else, I resorted to the internet for some reprieve and a couple of reddit posts later, I delved into the cesspit that is coding.

A solid math background, a niche for creativity and already a keen interest in tech; what was there not to like? I started off learning front end development with learning HTML and CSS and completed both courses on the Solo learn platform and was certified. I was pretty happy with myself and the few low-end projects I completed during that time frame (most of which never saw the outside of my PC hard drive). Then I started on learning C++ with a view to getting into OOP, an area that matches up with my course of study as an electronics engineering student.

Anyway, fast forward a couple of months later and all that zeal and enthusiasm seems to have disappeared. At the moment, it doesn’t really seem like designing websites and landing pages is what I want to be doing. It may appeal much more to some others especially when you consider the more nuanced aspects of it (maybe even you reading this). However, I have slowly drifted from the programming rave that enveloped me during the lockdown period and I don’t think I’ll be looking back anytime soon.

Of course, my interest in tech is still as strong as ever and considering how wide the field itself is, there are other aspects which now appeal more to me. I may still return back to my C++ course eventually as I like the whole concept of it in particular and its pretty much the base of OOP which would be really valuable in my course of study.

So, what inspired me to become a developer? I am pretty sure you may have your own theories already but that’s inconsequential at this point. Just make sure yours is a strong enough motivation to make you see out your journey to the end!
